India's largest bank, majority owned by the Government of India
State Bank of India is a public-sector bank and India's largest, with about a quarter of the country's loans and deposits. The Government of India owns about 56% of it, and it is one of India's largest employers.
SBI took its current form in 1955 from the Imperial Bank of India, whose history goes back to the Bank of Calcutta in 1806. It is headquartered at Nariman Point, Mumbai.
